An update on NUS modules

Hi all, I just heard from a HOD that your NUS module grades will now be counted into your NUS CAP, if you go there in future.

That makes more sense, don't you think?

Cheers.

  1. I heard about Advanced placement credit for NUS module. What is it? If the student start taking NUS module in yr 4, does it mean that he can proceed to take yr 2 or 3 modules by the time the student reach yr 6? Then NUS High student should take NUS modules as early as possible, so that by yr 6, he may be able to graduate from NUS with Bachelor degree ? Ha ha, interesting!

  2. Yes once you have fulfilled the prerequisites for that module (whether year 2 or 3) you should be able to take it. Ian Seet for example, he has already taken year 2 chemistry modules although he is only a Year 4 student.

I think it is quite hard to graduate with a degree in Year 6, even if you take modules from Year 1, because you have to juggle studies on both ends. But if a student does start NUS modules in Year 1, he could probably go to NUS and get his degree in one year, which is pretty cool.

  3. Thanks Vanessa for the update. Yes, it does make more sense now (once NUSH has made it official).

Hopefully in the future, NUSH students will also be allowed to take the exams of those exempted modules (when they accelerate) so that the grades can also be counted into the NUSH CAP. Alternatively, these students could be given a CAP of 5.0 for the exempted modules. I feel this is a fairer system.

  4. Hi Vanessa, what is your plan for college and scholarship applications?

  5. College apps-wise, I will be applying to both US and UK schools, and NUS. So far my overseas college list stands as: UC Berkeley, Cambridge, Cornell, Duke, Haverford, Imperial, Stanford, Swarthmore, UCL, UIUC. Considering Johns Hopkins and UWM. I may or may not apply to Australian universities.

Scholarships-wise I am pretty interested in research so I'll try for an A*STAR scholarship, and probably DSTA as well. I attended the public sector fair and the EDB scholarship dialogue recently, to help me look into other options as well.

I may also apply to Harvard with financial aid, since they are need-blind even for internationals, even though my chances there are probably less than 1%. Doesn't hurt to try, after all.

  7. Goes without saying, but in case there are any juniors there crazy like me who somehow get offered NUS lit or geog or history or something: the school does not offer any subsidy for HASS modules even if you get amazing grades. For math and science, the school will subsidise it almost completely if you get more than B. Sad (but expected).
