Some of you have come up to me, asking if they could view my application essays. I'll do some posts on them. Do note that certain things which could be sensitive to public eyes have been removed.
Name your favorite books, authors, films, and/or musical artists.
I like books dealing with Physics and Engineering, such as “200 Puzzling Physics Problems”, which require creativity and insight to solve. Richard Feynman is brilliant at explanations, and a candid author whom I admire. I love musicals such as the Phantom of the Opera and My Fair Lady.
What newspapers, magazines, and/or websites do you enjoy?
National Geographic highlights issues on human nature, geography, and archaeology. Wikipedia is convenient for finding out anything. Some of the information is questionable, but adequate for an interested passerby. The Economist keeps me aware on the happenings of the global political scene.
What is the most significant challenge that society faces today?
Lack of financial awareness. The subprime crisis was brought about by a combination of misguided judgments and uninformed decisions. Money is not the most important thing, but lack of money brings a slew of very serious problems, many which could be avoided by the right financial training.
How did you spend your last two summers?
I participated in the Singapore Physics Olympiad and Singapore Chemistry Olympiad, and was involved in an overseas service learning trip to Zhangpu, China, where I taught English to some students. Another summer was spent on attachment at the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology.
What historical moment or event do you wish you could have witnessed or participated in?
The Christmas ceasefire of 1914 during World War I between the Germans and the English. It’s a poignant example of how peace can exist despite the harshest conditions. A common festive celebration brought mortal enemies together, and it must have been a momentous occasion for all those present.
What five words best describe you?
Just; determined; driven; curious; competitive
